Superovulation and embryo collection

Superovulation is the most commonly used method to produce multiple embryos from a single female and is a great tool for increasing the number offspring produced from genetically valuable donor animals.  OvaTech offers superovulation and embryo collection procedures as both in-clinic and on-farm services.  Collected embryos can be transferred fresh to synchronized recipients or frozen for transfer at a later date.

Ovum pick-up and in-vitro fertilization

In-vitro fertilization can be used to obtain embryos from older donor animals or donors that don't respond well to superovulation procedures.  In vitro fertilization also offers some advantages over superovulation for normal, healthy donor females.  In particular, ovum pick and in-vitro fertilization procedures can be repeated more frequently than superovulation which can increase the number of embryos produced over the same time period.  In addition, oocytes collected from several donor females can be fertilized with very little semen thereby reducing the semen cost for embryo production.  In-vitro fertilization is also the best method for utilizing sexed-sorted semen in embryo production.  OvaTech offers the ovum pick-up procedure as an in-clinic and on-farm service.  Collected oocytes are then transported to our IVF laboratory for fertilization and embryo culture.  Embryos produced by in vitro fertilization can be transferred fresh to synchronized recipients or cryopreserved using a technique called vitrification for transfer at a later date.

For your convenience, OvaTech offers donor and recipient management services at its Gainesville location and at both satellite locations.  This service is ideal for clients with only a few animals or for producers who don't have much experience with embryo transfer.  Use of this service allows OvaTech personnel to make sure all embryo production protocols are followed correctly and that donor and recipient females are in good health and body condition prior to the start of embryo production services.  OvaTech's donor and recipient management program involves a 30-day pre-embryo production nutrition program and all animals must be health-certified prior to entering our facilities.  For those producers that don't have recipient animals available, OvaTech also offers health-certified recipients at all of our locations.  Recipient animals are verified pregnant at 70 days of gestation and can then be transported to your farm.

The Dairy Plus embryo transfer program is designed specifically for commercial dairy producers.  The goal of the program is to allow dairymen to improve pregnancy rates in problem-breeder and heat-stressed cows through the use of an affordable embryo transfer scheme.  OvaTech uses in-vitro fertilization technology to produce embryos in bulk thereby reducing the cost of embryo production.  Oocytes for embryo production can be obtained from the producer's own cows, from non-selected Holstein cows, or from selected, registered Holstein cows.  Producers can choose any type of bull for fertilization including commercially available sex-sorted semen.  Embryos produced in the Dairy Plus ET program can be transferred fresh to synchronized recipients (for farms within 3 hours of Gainesville) or vitrified for transfer at the producer's convenience.
